Important Tips for Avoiding Pool Pump Damage

Your pool pump is a critical component of your pool’s circulation system. When it fails, everything grinds to a halt, and water problems can develop quickly. Avoiding pool pump damage can save you money and a lot of hassle.

The good news is that following a few simple steps can help you avoid many of the most common pool pump problems. Start with this simple maintenance checklist.

1. Quickly Seal Leaks and Gaps

Over time, pool pumps can develop leaks around the valves, filter bands, pump drain plugs, and the O-ring (pump lid seal). A leak on the suction side before the pump can cause air bubbles to accumulate inside. Eventually, the excess air causes the pump’s motor to work harder than it should and it will start to run hot.

As part of your regular maintenance, be sure to thoroughly check your pool pump for leaks. If you find any, fix them right away by replacing the faulty part or using a silicone-based sealant.

2. Monitor Your Water Levels

When a pool’s water line gets below mid-skimmer level, the pump may not get enough water. A pump that runs dry can overheat and the resulting high temperatures can warp important internal components. It’s common for overheating to cause pump baskets to melt, PVC threads to shrink, and seal shafts to break.

You can avoid these problems by regularly checking your pool’s water levels and adding water before it gets too low.

3. Protect Your Pump from Pests

Another common problem occurs when insects get inside your pump, control box, or breaker box. This can cause damage to the electronics and wiring and may even cause the entire pump to short-circuit.

Keep pests out by sealing up cracks and access points to any of your pool equipment that contains electronics. Also check your breaker box and close any open knockouts. Then, add another layer of protection by placing a natural insecticide on the ground around your pool equipment.

4. Maintain Proper Airflow

A lack of airflow is a common issue that leads to pool pump damage. This often occurs when branches, leaves, and other debris accumulate on or around the pump. Debris that is left for too long can also trap moisture inside the pump, eventually leading to corrosion.

To prevent these issues, be sure to maintain a clearance of two-to-three feet both around and above your pool filter. Check the area once a week and remove any debris that has accumulated around your pump.

5. Prevent Water Damage

If you’re in an area that’s prone to flooding, it’s important to protect your pool pump. If water gets into your pump, it can short-circuit the electronics or permanently damage the motor.

Make sure your pool pump is positioned above the water level. If not, place it on higher ground or add extra drainage by digging a small trench around the pump area and filling it with gravel.
